Talbert and McElveen Crowned Champions at the 20th CPGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championship!
Boys go through three-hole playoff!
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (December 13, 2009) - It was the tale of two championships today as umbrellas and black rain suits dotted the Surf Club's landscape during the Final Round of play at the 20th Annual Carolinas PGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championship in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A nine-shot win catapulted First Round leader McKenzie Talbert, 14, of North Augusta, S.C. to her first girls overall Tilghman Junior Championship, hours before a three-hole playoff between Drew McElveen, 17, of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and CGA points leader Andy Knox, 17, of Cary, N.C., decided the boys overall champion. McElveen came out on top, sinking a birdie putt from 20 feet.
"It was a shootout all day between Andy and me," said McElveen. "We were back and forth all day and I knew the playoff wasn't going to be easy. I had been playing really solid golf all day so I knew I had a good shot at it and I came away with this one."
McElveen is a senior at St. Jame High in Murrells Inlet. His two day total was 72-70, 142 (2-under).
Though Knox may have missed first place by a putt, he did secure his place on top of the CGA Carolinas Player of the Year standings.
"I really wanted this one, and obviously it meant something to me," he said. "I just couldn't put it together."
Talbert didn't have quite the dramatic finish though from her standpoint, even a 3-under Final Round should have been better.
"I was 5-under again today and let it slip away," she said. I played well both days and I knew the weather wouldn't have much affect on me. All in all it was a pretty good tournament for me and I really enjoyed winning this year."
Talbert was the runner-up in 2008.
Other notables include last year's girls overall champion Louise Oxner finished third in the 13-15 Girls Division. Kaitlin Matheson of Easley, S.C. finished second. Kayla Scuipider of Hendersonville, N.C. finished first in the Girls 16-18 Division with a score of 4-over 148. Cody Proveaux, 15, of Pelion, S.C. and Davis Womble, 16, of High Point, N.C. tied for first in the Boys 15-16 Division at even par 144. Wesley Long, 14, of Bluffton, S.C. finished first in the Boys 13-14 Division at even par 144.
A full field of 96 of the Carolinas’ best junior boys and girls from the ages of 13-18 descended on the Surf Golf & Beach Club in hopes of capturing the last All-Carolinas Player of the Year points-earning tournament, and one of the last junior tournaments of the highly competitive 2009 junior tournament season.
The format for the Carolinas PGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championship is 36-hole stroke play. Competitors are divided by age: 13 & 14, 15 & 16 and 17 & 18-year-old boys and 13 to 15 and 16 to 18-year-old girls. Each division champion first, second, and third-place finishers received an award, along with the awards presented for the overall boys and girls champions.
